In Etnedal card-playing was reckoned a great sin in those days. Knut Toreson of Hagaset saw the Evil One at a card party at Smiugarden, after the men had played all night. Toward morning he bent for a fallen card and caught sight of a raven-black dog sitting and ringing its claws about the table-leg. The card-playing stopped at once, and "that was the last time I played cards," said Knut when he told it.
