A captain pledged the first aboard, but the cook's shout saved his wife at the last moment.

In Hitis a sea captain promised the dark one whatever came aboard first on his return, in exchange for luck on the voyage. When his wife rowed out with a dog in the boat, the fiend nearly seized her, but the cook called out in time to throw the dog aboard first. She did so, and the dark one carried off the dog until only a wet stain remained.
