Whoever swore themselves to the devil signed in blood from the left hand — and lost their shadow, which he took as a pledge.

At Ekshärad it is told how those who wished to swear themselves to the devil had to write a contract and let him take them after death, in exchange for success in all they did in life. The name was signed not in ink but in blood, and an oath was sworn with a black cloth over the face, prompted by one who had already made the pact. The sworn one gained power to accomplish anything in the devil's name, but lost their shadow, which the devil took as a pledge.
