Merchant Dubbe and the Black Dog

A huge black dog glared from under the table as the rich merchant counted his coins, said to be the devil himself.

On Gotland rumours circulated about the wealthy merchant Jacob Dubbe, said to have gained his fortune by foul means and to be in league with the devil. When someone came in suddenly they found him pale and frightened, and beneath the table lay a great black dog with burning eyes, the devil in disguise, people said. Another time his coachman heard an unseen presence pressing him in the carriage. The teller admitted, though, that envy likely fed the tales.
