The Amrieh Hotel

Berget Libanon · Libanon · Hotel

From the luxury hotel's sealed-off floors, voices and footsteps are still said to echo – and beneath the stairs gapes a cave no one dares explore.

The Amrieh Hotel in the mountain village of Bikfaya was one of Lebanon's most glamorous pleasure palaces in the 1960s, complete with an open-air theatre, a cinema and society parties where stars such as Umm Kulthum are said to have performed. The civil war ended the glory days, and the colossus has stood empty ever since. Villagers tell of voices and noises from floors whose stairways have long been blocked, and of song echoing through the former Tsar Hall. Between the hotel's two wings, a staircase leads down to a cave with tunnels that, according to locals, no one dares enter.
