Pakruojis Manor
Pakruojis, Šiauliai · Lithuania · Manor
At Baron von der Ropp's estate footsteps and running water sound in empty halls – and in the cellar a servant hanged himself, his unrest said to linger.
Pakruojis, Lithuania's largest surviving manor ensemble, was ruled for five generations by the Baltic-German baronial family von der Ropp – among them the notorious "Hermann the Cruel". Staff and guests tell of footsteps in empty corridors in the evenings, lights switching on and off by themselves, the sound of running water, and windows flying open in windless weather. The unease is tied to the estate's dark episodes: in Soviet times a young man reportedly fell to his death on the stairs, and a servant hanged himself in the cellar. Today the manor is a visitor attraction with a hotel – the ghost stories part of the experience.
