In the ducal burial vault beneath Jelgava Palace rest thirty coffins – and builders swear a White Lady appeared to them on the scaffolding.

The vast baroque palace of Jelgava, designed by Rastrelli for the Dukes of Courland, holds in its basement a burial vault with some thirty coffins of the Kettler and Biron ducal families. A White Lady has long been part of palace lore: during one renovation an entire work crew reportedly saw the white figure appear out of nowhere and glide straight towards one of the men on the scaffolding. Students of the agricultural university that occupies the palace today also tell of unexplained footsteps and cold draughts in the long corridors at night. The burial vault is open to visitors and is one of the most atmospheric rooms in the Baltics.
