Azemmour
Casablanca-Settat · Morocco · Urban site
On the banks of the Oum er-Rbia, the beautiful demon Aicha Kandicha is said to lurk – the woman with goat's legs who drives men to madness.
The old river town of Azemmour at the mouth of the Oum er-Rbia is reckoned the home ground of Morocco's most feared being: Aicha Kandicha. The legend, rooted in the 16th-century struggles against the Portuguese, describes her as an enchantingly beautiful woman with hooves or goat's legs instead of feet, appearing by the river at dusk. Men who let themselves be lured are said to lose their minds or vanish without a trace. In Azemmour's alleys, generations have grown up with the warning never to answer an unknown beauty calling your name by the water after dark.
