Around the fortress island of Mamula at the mouth of the Bay of Kotor, fishermen say cries of lament still carry across the water on still nights.

The round Austro-Hungarian fortress, built in 1853 by General Lazar Mamula, covers nearly all of the small island of Lastavica at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor. In both world wars the fort served as a notorious prison, and during the second the occupying forces ran a camp here where inmates starved and suffered in the casemates. The island has since gained a reputation for being cursed: fishermen and divers passing by tell of an oppressive presence, of moans, whispers and children's crying that seem to seep from the stone walls. The fort's recent conversion into a luxury resort has not silenced the stories – rather the opposite.
