Högby old churchyard & the Högby stone

Östergötland · Sweden · Sägenplats · Scare 4/5

An abandoned churchyard and Östergötland's second-greatest runestone, naming the freeholder Gulle's five sons — all dead.

At the abandoned church site north of Högby church stands the Högby stone (Ög 81, ~1010–1050), second only to the Rök stone. Torkel carved a verse about the freeholder Gulle whose five sons all died violently: Asmund at Fyris, Assur east in Byzantium, Halvdan on Bornholm, Kåre 'at the headland', and Bo. [Documented — the dark tale is the stone's own text.]
