Locals say a guest from the days of empire never checked out — and the footsteps upstairs are heard while the house stands empty.
Among the people of Pyin Oo Lwin, Candacraig has long carried the reputation that a guest from the days of empire never checked out. Visitors have told of creaking footsteps and rustling from the upper floor while the house stood empty, and many in town are reluctant to spend a night in the old colonial villa at all.
The house was built in 1904 as a club for the young officers of the British timber company in the hill town of Maymyo, where colonial officials fled the heat of the plains. Later it became a hotel with guests including George Orwell and Paul Theroux, who wrote about it. Today the villa, with its little turrets and winding staircases, stands closed and decaying in an overgrown garden.
