Deep in the forests of Asker, 27 of 30 buildings stand empty, and those who have gone inside come out with the same accounts: footsteps in corridors where no one is, doors slamming by themselves, and the feeling of being watched from the blind windows. Dikemark opened in 1905 as Kristiania's new asylum, a whole town of grand pavilions with names like Slottet — the ward for the half-disturbed men — Utsikten and Kurhus. Hundreds of patients were sent here, many for life, in an age when psychiatry meant locked doors, restraint beds and coercion. Today almost everything is abandoned and the site is described as a ghost town, the pavilions staring out over the lake. The hospital museum in the Bjørkeli building preserves the memory of those who lived and died here.
