Nepal's Taj Mahal was raised in grief for Tej Kumari Devi – and an unseen woman is said to still wander the palace by the Kali Gandaki.

Ranighat Palace was built in 1893 by General Khadga Shamsher Rana on the rocks beside the Kali Gandaki river, in memory of his beloved wife Tej Kumari Devi, who had died the year before. The palace is called Nepal's Taj Mahal, but the general was forced into exile in 1902 and left the building to decay. Visitors and locals describe a woman's presence in the empty halls: footsteps, rustling fabric, and a figure whose face no one has ever seen. Many believe it is Tej Kumari herself, never having left her memorial palace.
