In Surteby a couple is said to have sold their unborn son to the devil and grown rich. The boy grew up kind and good, and as the day of collection drew near his parents sought the priest's help. He set the boy inside the altar rail and wrote the Lord's Prayer outside. A lovely Christmas tree lit up in the gallery and a hand reached for him, but the boy held his place and by dawn was saved.
