A priest in Rendalen owned the black book and hid it under the bolster of his bed. One morning, making the bed, the maid found the book and leafed and read until the devil himself came and asked what was the matter. She screamed in terror; the priest guessed what had happened, ran to the storehouse and emptied a sack of peas. He set the devil to count every pea, and managed to bind him before he finished.
