The devil came again and again for the dying Blåsman — but each time he slipped away, once by swallowing his own knee strap.

At Dalby it is told of Blåsman, whom the devil sought several times to take. Lying gravely ill, he asked a friend to cut the knee strap from his trousers and chop it fine, whereupon Blåsman swallowed it and escaped. The devil appeared to him as a fine gentleman, a black hound, or a bird, and was present when people drank and fought, to take whoever fell. Folk belief forbade walking backward, twirling the thumbs, or whistling, for such things mimicked the devil.
