The Farmhand Who Gave a Gentleman a Ride at Bergum
Västergötland · Sweden · Sägenplats · Scare 3/5
A courteous, silent gentleman paid for his ride with a silver coin — but the coin became horse dung, and a tail showed beneath his cloak.
At Skallsjö it is told of a farmhand who drove home from Göteborg one winter evening and was joined by a stately, silent gentleman. At a side road the gentleman stepped down, thanked him, and gave him a large silver coin. As the farmhand turned, he saw to his horror a long, bushy tail protruding beneath the cloak. At home the coin had become a lump of horse dung. The next day word spread that someone nearby had taken their own life just where the gentleman alighted, and the farmhand understood he had given the devil a ride.
