A drunkard scalded his patient wife – and a glowing-eyed dog at the bedside taught him never to put out the lamp again.
A man in Knäred drank all through Christmas and one Epiphany Eve kicked over the porridge pot so that his wife scalded her hands. She wept but did not reproach him, and that struck him. In the night he saw a great black dog with glowing eyes and a flaming mouth standing with its paws against the bedside, staring at him. For the rest of that winter he dared not put out the lamp, and after this he became sober and steady.
