Vicar Jonas Wallin and the Wheel, Kungsäter
Västergötland · Sweden · Site of legend
The Devil unscrewed the priest's wheel and tried to bind him to a fir – but had to carry the axle through ditch and brook.
The vicar Jonas Wallin in Kungsäter, who died in 1794, was said often to be at odds with the Devil. Once the Evil One tried to bind the priest to a fir by the road and first unscrewed one wheel of his cart. But the deed failed, and the priest forced the Devil to bear the end of the cart axle while he drove on to the church. He drove as close to ditches and verges as he could, so the Devil had to run through ditches and over brooks the whole way, and on arriving he displayed him to all the church folk.
