The Devil Outwitted at Töftedal
Dalsland · Sweden · Site of legend
A thief dressed in an ox-hide to steal a wallet — but a boy thought it was the devil himself and reached for his father's gun.
At Töftedal a man who had lent out a large sum offered his guest refreshments. Later a shaggy figure with horns and a tail crept into the cottage where two children had been left alone and took a wallet from a shelf. The girl believed it was the devil, but the boy seized his father's loaded gun and fired at the creature — which turned out to be a neighbour disguised in an ox-hide.
