The Dog That Leapt into the Grave, Locknevi
Småland · Sweden · Kyrkogård · Scare 3/5
The priest banished the black dog, but it vowed to return – and leapt down into the dying man's grave.
In Locknevi an old fellow was about to die, and then a great black dog with a red, fire-glowing tongue came and lay down under the table. The priest was called and drove the dog out with a red-hot fire-fork and prayer book through a hole beneath the window ledge. But the dog said it would return as soon as the priest was home. When the old man died the dog lay at his head, and then it ran ahead and leapt into the grave – and at the grave's head end there was always a hole large enough to set a fence post into.
