For a thousand daler poor Pål sold his wife to Skam, then saved her with three books.
At Traneberg in Brålanda lived, the legend says, poor Käke-Pål and his wife Elle. A gentleman in furs offered a thousand daler for her, and Pål took the money but bound a hymnbook, a Bible and a prayer book upon her. When Skam came to fetch her he fled in terror at the sight of the books, and Pål grew rich.
