Homeward from the service the wheel came off – and the priest forced the Evil One to carry the cart all the way home and confess his hold.

As the priest Kjerrulf travelled home from worship at Norum church, a wheel suddenly fell from his cart, the work of the Evil One. The priest forced the Fiend to carry the whole cart all the way to the parsonage and demanded to know what sin had given him power. The wife confessed she had combed herself and the children on the Sabbath, whereupon the priest drove the Fiend out through an awl-hole in the window lead, leaving him to whine pitifully.
