A poor, luckless smith in Småland made a pact with the Devil in return for being collected one day. Suddenly everything he did prospered, and he could shoe the wildest horses by cutting off their legs and fixing them back on. When the appointed time came the smith fooled him again and again – first up a birch with the help of a sorceress, and then with fresh ruses – to keep putting off his debt.
