On the lands of Tranebärg on the island of Kållandsö lies Arkebacken, where a giant or the Fiend is said to have appeared. A herd-boy who had grown rich and grand through a pact with him gathered priests when his time was up. They read against the Fiend, who blinded them so the houses seemed ablaze, yet the priests did not give up. The Fiend had to settle for taking the man for life only, for he refused salvation – that would have made him a herd-boy once more.
