The Devil's Crossing at Sysslebäck

Värmland · Sweden · Site of legend

A gentlemanly traveller with a black horse was in such haste across the ferry that fire flared under the hooves – and burned a hole in the ferryman's hat.

At Sysslebäck there was once a ferry, and one day the Devil wished to cross. He was fine as a gentleman in a long black coat and tall hat, with a black horse, and was in such haste that he hauled the ferry faster than anyone. When he reached land fire flared up under the horse's hooves, and the coin he had dropped in the ferryman's hat had burned a hole and vanished.
