The Oars and the Sorcerer at Lake Rämen
Värmland · Sweden · Site of legend
The Fiend tore the oars from the locks to keep the priest from the dying man – but the priest rowed on, and the sorcerer confessed his killings.
At Rämen the priest Alsterblad rowed with his farmhand across Lake Rämen to a dying old man. Out on the lake the oars kept leaping from the rowlocks, and it was believed the Fiend wished to stop the priest from reaching him. But the priest's oars held, and they reached land. Then the sick man, who had been a sorcerer, confessed he had bewitched many people to death and begged forgiveness.
