In Surteby in Västergötland a man is said to have sold himself to the devil and, in his distress, sought the priest's help. That evening the priest placed him inside the altar rail and wrote the Lord's Prayer outside it. When the devil came he tried to lure the man out and even raised a fir to drop on him, but his power fell short and the tree toppled outside the rail. By morning the man was free.
