The Sand Ropes on Skjoldsanden, Salten

Nordland · Norway · Naturplats · Scare 3/5

The devil could never make the sand hold together as rope – and begged in vain for tar before the priest came home.

Once, while the priest Werlauff was travelling, he left the black book lying out, and his son or a farmhand read the devil free. The man first set him to count the grains in a barrel, then to make rope from the Skjoldsand. The devil heaped the sand into ridges but could never get it to hold, and begged in vain for a little tar. Just then Werlauff came home and could send him away. Skjoldsanden still bears the marks of his labour.
