The Sand Ropes on Kaupanger Shore, Sogndal

Sogn og Fjordane · Norway · Naturplats · Scare 3/5

The children read the devil loose and the house soon seemed ablaze – until mixed grain and rope of sand held him.

At a parsonage in Sogndal they owned the black book, and once when the children read in it the house soon seemed ablaze. The priest mixed three barrels of different grains and made the devil separate every grain, so he had time to bind him. Another time the farm's boys set him to carry a thousand stakes, then to twist rope from sand – a task so hard they had time to read the passage that bound him. The rope-ends can still be seen on the Kaupanger shore.
