A stranger taught him to win every hand – but the price was sitting under the table.

Told in Sør-Aurdal in 1927: a merchant lost his horse, sledge and load at a card game until a townsman offered, for ten dalers, to teach him to always win. He won back everything and the ten dalers besides, but when a card finally fell, the Evil One himself sat beneath the table. He stopped at once and never touched a deck of cards again in his life.
