A small servant boy sent for drink was given a ride into the sky – and back home the black horse stood on the doorstep.

A father told how, as a small servant boy in Numedal, he was sent one evening to fetch more drink for a band of revellers. On the road a fine stranger with a black horse gave him a lift, but the ride suddenly rose into the air and he threw himself off in terror. Back at the Rauland farm the black horse stood with its forelegs on the doorstep, and inside two brothers were knifing each other to death.
