A smith could not weld iron until the dark one accidentally let slip the secret of the sand.

In Mörskom a smith struggled for three days to forge axe-eyes, but the iron would not take. On the third evening the dark one looked in and asked how many he had made, and when the smith boasted, the fiend assumed he must have thrown plenty of sand into the fire. Then the smith understood the secret, cast sand into the forge, and the iron welded together as it should.
