Old Castle Celje — Štajerska · Slovenia · Castle

Veronika of Desenice was drowned on Count Herman's orders – and is said to wander still as a pale figure about Celje's old castle.

Slovenians call it their own tale of Romeo and Juliet. Frederick II of Celje secretly married the low-born beauty Veronika of Desenice, to the fury of his father Herman II, who locked his son in the castle tower – still called Frederick's Tower today. Veronika was put on trial for witchcraft in one of the region's earliest witch trials, but was acquitted. Herman then had her drowned in a bathtub in 1425. Ever since, her restless spirit is said to roam the mighty castle rock above the town, mourning the love that cost her life.
