Skänninge execution site (Tivoliängen)
Östergötland · Sweden · Execution site
One of Sweden's most-excavated execution sites — used for ~600 years, eleven graves and a gallows ditch.
At Tivoliängen south of Skänninge lay the district execution ground, used from the 11th century to the mid-1600s. Östergötland's museum uncovered eleven graves and a circular ditch (read as the gallows-mound remnant). Here the executed and dishonoured, denied consecrated ground, were buried — in folk belief exactly those who became restless revenants. [Documented archaeology; the revenant motif is general folklore.]
