A boy hanged himself as a prank – but a magpie snatched the light, and in the dark no one could cut him down in time.

One evening during threshing in Foss a boy decided as a joke to hang himself just to feel what it was like, asking the others to cut him down. A magpie then swooped in and stole the candle, so they could not see to free him, and he was dead before they managed. Outside the magpie was heard laughing so hideously that all understood it was the Evil One in bird shape.
