With three wishes the smith trapped the Fiend in tree, chair and money-purse – but in the end neither heaven nor hell would let him in.

A smith at Otterstad had signed himself over to the Fiend but received three wishes from St Peter: whoever he bade into his apple tree, his chair or his purse had to stay. Time and again he caught the Fiend and forced him to delay collection, and at last he crushed him in the purse on his anvil. When the smith himself died he was turned away from both hell and heaven – and where he went, no one knows.
