In Surteby people told of ways to bind oneself to the devil. Whoever placed a cut-out ace of spades in his mouth at communion would afterward receive whatever he asked, but after some years the devil came to fetch him. Walking backwards was said to lead one toward the devil, and when small children did it people said they were driving their parents to hell.
