Under segregation this town had two high schools. Mr Prentice was principal of the Black one, and he checked on everything.

When Alabama schools were segregated, Montevallo had two high schools: Montevallo High School, and the school for Black students, known as Prentice High School after its principal.

Mr Prentice is described by everyone who remembers him in the same terms. He was kind, and he was known as a man who checked on things, all the time, everywhere in the building.

He is what is reported in the school now, and he is doing the same thing.

A principal of a Black high school in the segregated south held one of the most demanding positions in his community. He ran a school on a fraction of the funding the white school received, with second hand textbooks, and he was expected to be the whole of it: administrator, disciplinarian, advocate and shield.

That the building carries his name and that people still describe him going round checking on it is the most fitting outcome in this archive.
