In the 1840s something was killing sheep across Talbot County, Georgia in numbers that alarmed the whole district. So many animals were butchered that a reward of two hundred dollars was offered to anyone who could kill it, which was an enormous sum at the time.

Suspicion fell on a young woman named Isabella Burton, who was considered odd. Whenever she left the county, the killings stopped.

What is said to have happened when somebody finally fired at the creature is the rest of the story, and it is the oldest and best known werewolf legend in the American south.
