Old Hill Burying Ground

Massachusetts · United States · Cemetery

The oldest burial ground in Newburyport, across from the old gaol. Visitors have taken on other personalities while inside it, and then returned to.

Old Hill is the oldest burial ground in Newburyport, Massachusetts, standing opposite the historic gaol and alongside the Bartlet Mall.

The reports from it are unlike almost anything else in this archive. Visitors have been described as temporarily taken over, adopting a different personality while in the cemetery and returning to themselves on leaving.

Newburyport has a documented history for this kind of thing. In 1679 the house of William Morse in this town was the subject of one of the best recorded poltergeist cases in colonial New England, with sworn testimony taken, and it fed directly into the witchcraft prosecutions that followed in the region.

The graves here go back to the 1700s and hold sea captains, shipbuilders and their families from the years when Newburyport was one of the great American ports.

The burying ground is public and open.
