The Cheyenne tunnels

Wyoming · United States · Hotel

Built in the railroad days to connect the Plains Hotel, the depot and the Hynds Building. They may run as far as the capitol, three miles off, but nobody.

The tunnels beneath Cheyenne, Wyoming were dug in the early days of the railroad, as a way of moving between the Plains Hotel, the railway depot and the Hynds Building without going out into a Wyoming winter.

How far they run is genuinely unknown. Local account has them stretching as far as the capitol, roughly three miles, and nobody has confirmed it.

Those who have been down describe what is in them.

Cheyenne was created by the Union Pacific in 1867 and went from nothing to several thousand people in months, which is why it was called the Magic City of the Plains. What went on in the tunnels in those years, and who used them and why, is the part local accounts disagree about most.

Underground passages of this kind exist under many western railroad towns and are usually service tunnels, steam lines and coal deliveries rather than anything more colourful.

They are closed and mostly sealed.
