The old Leaf Brown Cemetery site

Missouri · United States · Cemetery

Sixty years ago the state ordered the graves at Leaf Brown Cemetery dug up and moved so the neighbourhood could be built. The school stands on the ground.

Before the school at Florissant, Missouri was built, and before the neighbourhood around it existed, the land held Leaf Brown Cemetery.

About sixty years ago the state ordered the owners to exhume the graves so the bodies could be relocated elsewhere and the site developed.

Whether every grave was moved is the question that hangs over the entire entry, and it is the question that hangs over a great many American cemetery relocations of that period. Records were poor, unmarked graves were common, and the work was paid by the plot.

What pupils and staff describe in the school follows from the assumption locally that some of them are still there.

The school is in use. The cemetery, whatever remains of it, is underneath it.
