Prince Frederick's Church
South Carolina · United States · Cemetery
The front wall is all that stands of this parish church built in the 1700s in South Carolina. Confederate soldiers are buried in the yard around it.
Prince Frederick's Church was built as a parish church in the 1700s about sixteen miles north of Georgetown, South Carolina, on highway SC 22-4 off US 701. It burned, and the front of the building is all that remains standing.
The graveyard around the ruins is still there and includes the graves of Confederate soldiers.
The presence local tradition names is a priest, said to have fallen from the roof of the church.
This entry needed correcting twice over. It circulated for years as the Old Gunn Church at Murrells Inlet, which is neither its name nor its location. The accurate name is Prince Frederick's Church and it is well north of Murrells Inlet.
The book Ghosts of Georgetown gives a fuller account of the church and what has been reported there than anything available online.
A ruined church front standing alone in the South Carolina low country, with a burial ground around it, is a striking enough sight that it would attract stories whether or not anything ever happened here.
