A guard at the Greenbelt complex heard footsteps come up the stairs, found nobody, then heard them go back down and watched a bin lid flip.

The account comes from a security guard working nights in one of the building complexes at NASA Goddard in Greenbelt, Maryland.

She was at her desk watching television when she heard someone coming up the stairs. She got up to look. There was nobody there. As she stood watching, she heard the footsteps go back down.

She put it down to imagination, which is what anybody would do.

Then it happened again, and this time when the steps reached the bottom she saw the door open and the lid of a small waste bin flip over.

That second detail is what makes the report worth keeping. The first incident is a sound in a stairwell, which any building will supply. The second is a physical event she was looking directly at while it happened.

Goddard is a working federal research centre and is not accessible. The witness was doing precisely the job that involves noticing who is in a building at night, which makes her a better source than most.
