A Union sympathiser during the Civil War, betrayed and pursued, drove her wagon off the bridge. She was shot trying to save the baby in it.

Sarah Jane Road at Port Neches, Texas is one of the best known legends in the region.

The account holds that Sarah Jane was a Union sympathiser during the Civil War, in a part of Texas where that was a dangerous thing to be. She was betrayed, and Confederate soldiers came for her.

Trying to escape, she drove her wagon off the bridge into the water. Her baby was in the wagon with her. She was shot by a soldier while trying to get the child out.

Standing on the bridge at night, people report hearing both of them.

No record has been produced for any of it, and the story exists in several versions locally, one of which drops the war entirely. What is consistent across all of them is the water, the child, and the mother going in after it.

The road and the bridge are public.
