Three out of work miners robbed a widow at Hastings, Pennsylvania and hid the money in a disused part of the mine. They were caught by talking about it in.

In the early 1900s three miners were out of work in the small mining town of Hastings, Pennsylvania. They heard that a widow in the area kept a large amount of jewellery and money in her house, and judged it an easy job.

It did not go smoothly. They took the money, but the widow's eldest son shot one of them in the arm during the robbery. The three made their way to what was then the Miller Run Mining Company No 1, hid the takings in a part of the mine that was no longer being worked, and went back to Hastings.

They were picked up in a police dragnet three days later, having got drunk and talked about what they had done. There was not enough evidence to hold them on the strength of that.

The mine is open to visitors today as a tourist attraction, which is unusual for a site on this list. It also means the accounts collected inside it come from guides and paying visitors rather than from trespassers, and the disused section is the part everyone asks about.
