The legend at Fort Roberdeau in Sinking Valley, Pennsylvania is that a guard was attacked and killed while on watch at the fort, and that a young boy and his dog were found dead as well.

The fort visitors see is a reconstruction. It stands further down the road and off to the right, on a different site from the original.

The fort was built in 1778 to protect the lead mines in this valley, and lead meant ammunition for an army that was desperately short of it. It was garrisoned by militia on what was then the frontier, and attacks in this country during the Revolution were real, frequent and brutal on all sides.

Whether this particular killing happened has not been established.

The reconstruction is a county park and is open. The fields are farmland.
