The Garrison Inn on Brown Square in Newburyport was built in brick in 1809 for the merchant Moses Brown. Its ghost stories are unusually well named. Room 408 is attributed to Sarah White Banister, Brown's heir: staff say they have seen her there, and guests describe something moving in the room at night. Moses Brown himself is said to appear most often down in the tavern, in or beside the brick archways — the bartenders have talked about it in the local press. There is a child as well: a guest staying alone in a nearby room afterwards described sitting and talking with a little girl. The building has been a hotel since the 1960s.
