In the summer of 1692 Gloucester was besieged for a fortnight by men in white waistcoats that bullets passed straight through — Ebenezer Babson saw them first.

The old Town Green on Washington Street held Gloucester's meeting house and garrison, and this is where the families fled in the summer of 1692. The farmer Ebenezer Babson came home late one evening and saw two men leave his own house and run into the cornfield; one carried a bright gun slung across his back. On the following nights he saw them again, dressed as French soldiers and as gentlemen in white waistcoats and breeches. Men from the garrison fired on them again and again, and the bullets were later dug out of the tree trunks — but the figures got up and walked away. For a fortnight the whole of Cape Ann lived in terror. Only when the settlers stopped shooting and turned to prayer did the siege end. Cotton Mather wrote it all down.
